In this workshop, Anna E. Cook will guide you in conducting an accessibility audit on your design systems to create more inclusive experiences. Learn how to meet user needs and gain competitive advantages by building inclusive, user-friendly products. You'll explore how to audit designs, client-side code, and documentation. This practical session will equip you not only to perform audits but also to effectively communicate the results to gain support for further accessibility improvements.

Requirements

● Basic understanding of UX/UI design principles and front-end development
● Familiarity with design systems or a desire to learn about them
● A laptop with internet access and design software (e.g., Sketch, Figma, Adobe XD)
● Participants are encouraged to come with a design system in mind to practice accessibility auditing during the session\

Workshop Plan

  1. Welcome and overview of the workshop (5 minutes)\
  2. Setting Up your Design System Audit (15 minutes)\
  3. Practice (60 minutes) - Participants will practice reviewing designs, frontend code, and documentation for accessibility
    a. Reviewing designs for accessibility (20 minutes)
    b. Automated testing for frontend code (20 minutes)
    c. Manual testing for frontend code (20 minutes)\
  4. Break (10 minutes)\
  5. Hands-on Auditing Workshop (45 minutes) - Participants will work in groups to audit a sample design system or a design system of their choosing\
  6. Closing and Q&A (15 minutes)\
